God’s Transforming Grace

Everyone loves a good transformation story. From housing reality TV shows to childhood classics like Cinderella, the contrast between “before” and “after” makes our hearts swell with hope. The promise of change reminds us that our present state doesn’t have to be permanent.

You might be reading this and thinking there’s no hope for you or that you can’t change. Prior to his conversion, Paul, too, would’ve been considered by many to be a lost cause. “But by the grace of God,” he says, “I am what I am.” From a persecutor to an apostle, Paul was transformed.

Your past or present circumstances do not disqualify you from God’s grace or forgiveness. All you have to do is answer the call and allow yourself to be transformed by it.

1 Corinthians 15:9-10

“9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

Observations from the Text

  • A difficult past doesn’t disqualify us from God’s grace (v. 9)
  • God’s grace allows each of us to identify his call on our lives (v. 9-10)

  • We can’t earn God’s favor (v. 10)
