What Does the Holy Spirit Do?
What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
On the day of Pentecost, the Spirit of God came rushing in like wind and flame—filling the room and the hearts of Jesus’ followers. Ordinary people spoke in unfamiliar languages, barriers broke down, and boldness took the place of fear. That day changed everything.
The Spirit hasn’t stopped moving in God’s people since, and the church continues to remember and celebrate this day each year, 50 days after Easter.
Maybe you don’t hear rushing wind or see tongues of fire—but maybe you’ve felt a gentle nudge toward kindness. Or a moment of courage you didn’t think you had. Or a burst of strength when you were too tired to keep going.
The Spirit is still at work. Still present. Still filling people with God’s power, love, truth, and peace.
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:4).
A Prayer for Pentecost
Spirit of the living God, who rushed like wind and burned like fire, awaken my heart today. Just as you empowered your people at Pentecost, breathe new life into me. Fill my words with truth and kindness. Stir my spirit to speak boldly of your goodness. When I am weary, be my strength. When I am afraid, be my courage. Let your presence dwell in me, shaping how I move through the world. And may my life bear witness to the beautiful, boundary-breaking work you are still doing. Amen.
