A Prayer for Openness

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

1 SAMUEL 3:9

The Christian prayer life can sometimes feel stale. It doesn’t mean your faith is weak, or that you’re doing something wrong—so don’t get hung up on it! It just happens. But if you want to connect with God and don’t know how to pray, or simply don’t feel like praying…then these everyday prayers are for you.

Listening for God

Many of us want to hear from God… but our hearts are often crowded with plans, expectations, fears, and routines that make it difficult to notice his voice.

We want clarity before we move forward. We want the whole plan before we take the first step. But again and again in Scripture, God invites people to something different: a posture of listening. When the young boy Samuel hears God calling in the night, he learns a simple prayer that becomes a lifelong posture of faith: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Prayer can help us loosen our grip on control and become more open to where God might be leading.

Today’s scripture and prayer are for the moments when you sense God inviting you into something deeper, but you’re not quite sure what it is yet.

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9).

 A Prayer for Openness

God of open hands and open doors, I’m so often closed off to noticing your presence. It’s easy to cling to my routines and to what feels safe: my plans, my understanding, my way. But you are always inviting me into something deeper. Soften my heart to receive what you have for me. Help me listen without fear, trust without resistance, and step forward without needing to see the whole path. Let my spirit be open—to growth, to change, to hearing your voice speaking in unexpected ways. Amen.

Simple prayers like this are a great way to engage in your prayer life and connect with God today. For more everyday prayers, visit this page!
