Becoming More Holy

Our culture over-promises and under-delivers. Every day, there’s an offer to bypass hard work and discipline, and still get incredible results. But when it comes to the most important things—growing in character and becoming more like Jesus—there are no shortcuts.
God offers an invitation to become more loving, joy and peace-filled, patient and kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. We all need more of these fruits in our lives, but they don’t come naturally. Maybe one or two of them do for you. There are people who find joy in everything. Or who are naturally kind. But all of us have a few of these traits we find… particularly difficult.
The good news? These are fruits of the 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁—gifts from God that draw us closer to him. But we also have some responsibility in developing these traits in our lives. God does the heavy lifting, but we’re called to grow in the fruits of the Spirit by walking in step with him. So, there’s no quick fix, but if you want to grow in these fruits, here’s a Scripture and a prayer to encourage you each day.
“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions” (Galatians 5:16-17).
A Prayer for the Fruit of the Spirit
Gift-giver, you are generous with what’s best, and you believe in me more than I believe in myself. Come, Holy Spirit, and fill me with your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Increase those traits that come easier to me, specifically, _________. And for the ones I know are most difficult, like _________, save and heal me from my tendencies, and infuse in me the will to follow you. Amen.
