SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 28:13-14 Do you ever read Scripture and find yourself wondering, “is the Bible relevant today?” We definitely feel that disconnect. So we’ve set out to make Scripture meditations that give us a framework for how to start reading the Bible. Join us as we let the Bible be the Bible, and learn to engage with it meaningfully.

I Want To Be Honest With God

Confession.

It can be scary, intimidating, confusing, raw, emotional.

Many times, when we become Christians, we think of the first time we “confessed” as that moment when we declared that we need Christ as our Savior. Beyond that, it can be difficult to make confession a regular practice.

Confession is vulnerable, and it takes great humility to admit when you’ve done something wrong. But confession is a holy endeavor, too. A soft heart before your Heavenly Father fosters closeness with him. If the Holy Spirit prompts you to confess something, it’s a kindness, not a judgment or burden.

Through Jesus, we’ve already been given mercy and forgiveness, and God already knows our hearts and our sins. Confession just allows trust and intimacy to develop between us, freeing us from feeling the need to hide anything from our gracious and loving Father.

Proverbs 28 reminds us that in confessing our sins, we continue to find mercy.

Proverbs 28:13-14

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper,

but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

Blessed is the one who always trembles before God,

but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble.

Observations from the Text

  • There is mercy in confession (v. 13)
  • God blesses those who come before him with humility (v. 14)
  • A hard heart makes it difficult to confess (v. 14)

Prayers of Response

Merciful God, thank you for the gift of confession, and for making things right between us.

Lord of Forgiveness, today I need to confess _____ to you. Thank you for your unending grace.

Holy Spirit, keep my heart soft and open to conviction.

Lord, strengthen me each day as I continue to practice confession.

Father Who Frees, I’m walking in the freedom of your mercy and forgiveness today.
