If you want a relevant series of books to put words to things you’re seeing in our culture today, read the minor prophets. You might have to do a little work to see some of the similarities. But once you get your head around how to read these little books, you’ll notice some of our biggest struggles on display.
Injustice. Corporate greed. Taking advantage of the vulnerable. People in power who care more about power than those they’re supposed to be helping. Religious leaders who are self-serving. In fact, here are some themes to watch for whenever you crack open one of these little, but important, books.
Notice who’s confronted, it’s often the “important people.”
Kings. Priests. Other prophets.
Notice the repeated problems.
The rich getting richer while the poor suffer. Religious practices more concerned with accuracy than compassion. Rampant injustice.
But also notice God’s consistent response.
Anger toward injustice. Calling out worship that doesn’t lead to merciful action. Repeated offers of mercy and redemption. And promising to make all things right.
As a starting spot, check out the least-read book in the Bible, “Obadiah.” It’s weird. Confusing even. But wow, is it relevant to today. We have a guide to help you get started and learn to hear God’s voice through it.
