1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 Scripture meditations like this one help us connect with God each day and help us recognize reasons why the Bible is relevant today.
Called to Quiet
Written by Chesed Chipman, Spurgeon College
Have you ever grown weary of trying to keep up with a world that grows more complex by the minute? Do your ears ring with the noise of a world telling you conflicting messages about who you should be? Mine do. I groan for the simple, quiet life. Isn’t that what we’re all after? In a culture dominated by how much you can accomplish, the hope of a simple and quiet life seems like a beautiful dream that’s just out of reach.
This quiet life is exactly what Christians are called to. Paul calls the church to turn from the noise of the culture and tend to what God has given them to cultivate, a lifestyle of simplicity and quietness, with brotherly love. Believers don’t need to run to do more, to be more, to have more. They can rest quietly in the stillness and promises of God’s love.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
“…make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”
Observations from the Text
- We’re called to a quiet life (v. 11)
- A quiet life is a witness to unbelievers (v. 12)
- A quiet life is sufficient to meet needs (v.12)
