A Prayer for Leaving Work

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

Hebrews 4:9–10

The prayer life of a Christian can feel exhausting sometimes. Here is one of our simple prayers written to help you grow in your prayer life and connect with God, especially if you don’t feel like praying. Check it out!

I Can’t Stop Thinking About Work

Work doesn’t always end when the clock says it should. Emails linger. Projects hang in your mind. Conversations replay. Or maybe you’re a parent, caregiver, or student, where “clocking out” isn’t even a thing.

We live in a world that measures us by what we produce. And sometimes, we carry the pressure to keep going, even after the workday is done. But God created rest—not just as a reward for a job well done, but as a rhythm for healthy, human life.

Leaving work is more than shutting a laptop or finishing a shift. It’s a chance to pause, reset, and step into the part of life that isn’t defined by tasks and to-dos (although it may contain both!). It’s a time for connection, restoration, and delight. And it’s holy, too.

So, if you’re wrapping up the day and your brain’s still buzzing, here’s a prayer to help you let go of the weight of work and lean into rest with God.

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his” (Hebrews 4:9–10).

A Prayer for Leaving Work

God of rest and renewal, the workday is done, but my mind still lingers on what was left unfinished, on what tomorrow holds. Help me release what is not mine to carry into the evening. Let me be fully present with those I love, with the simple joys of being home, and with the quiet invitation to rest. Work has its place, but the life that takes place outside of my job is so important. Teach me to hold both well. Amen.
