Sitting With God

While structure and routine can create helpful habits in our daily connection with God, Maggie reminds us that making space just to be with him is just as important.

Psalm 105:1-4

“1 Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;

make known among the nations what he has done.

2 Sing to him, sing praise to him;

tell of all his wonderful acts.

3 Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

4 Look to the Lord and his strength;

seek his face always.”

Early in September, Our Daily Bread Ministries celebrated 84 years of ministry with a day of prayer. Many had questions about the event: would we each have to pray out loud? would we truly pray ? what could we possibly have to pray about for that long? Even for a ministry, Spiritual disciplines can be intimidating sometimes.

Imagine our shock when the pastor leading the event began by saying, “I’m not sure what’s gonna happen.” He simply invited us to seek God’s face.

What we found was a time of rest and remembrance. We shared verses about who God is and what he’s done. We sang and ate food; we laughed and enjoyed time together. It was a hopeful, joyful, restorative day.

I was struck by how that time with God was so different from how I typically approach it; there was no structure or checklist. No workbook or outline. It was life-giving to simply be with God. Not to ask for anything, not to confess. Just to exist and know he’s there. To tell him I love him. To remember he’s God.

Why It Matters

It can be difficult to just sit and enjoy time with God. But there’s nothing you have to do to earn his attention. He’s always right there, and delights in his time with you. Seeking God’s face can be simply enjoying God’s presence, remembering your time together, rejoicing in the hope that you have as his child, and telling him you love him.
