The Perfect Father

Family might not always be so perfect here on earth, but God’s designs for us are even better.

Luke 8:20-21

“And it was reported to Him, ‘Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You.’ But He answered and said to them, ‘My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.’”

Written by Daniel Hamlin

On a sunny afternoon when I was around 5, my family decided to enjoy a picnic on the beach. I’ve always been fascinated by water, so not surprisingly, I was playing in the sand, watching the gentle waves wash up the shore and then back down again. My older brother kept a watchful eye on me while my parents prepared lunch. Out of nowhere, a wave much larger than normal rushed ashore, picked me up, and swept me toward the sea. My brother, who was only 8, bravely grabbed hold of me to keep my head above water as the current swept us toward the horizon. We yelled for help and within seconds our dad was in the water, grabbing us both and safely carrying us to shore. The whole incident took less than a minute.

I remember how I instinctively wanted to get my dad involved. In my mind, all I needed to do was make my dad aware of the situation, and I knew he would do whatever it took to save us. There’s an event recorded in Luke where, in the midst of a huge crowd, it’s reported to Jesus that His family members are having a hard time getting to Him. Jesus’ response might seem a little odd, but it speaks volumes to us.

His response is that his family members are those who hear the word of God and do it. In one simple sentence, Jesus discloses one of the most profound truths about God that’s ever been revealed: God views us as family. The way He loves us, His dealings with us, His concern for us, are all likened to a familial relationship.

Why It Matters

Even if we’ve never known a healthy family upbringing, Jesus is declaring that He desires to be that for us— to love us as only a perfect Father can. Whatever rip current you may be caught in today, call out to your Father and know He will stop at nothing to rescue you.
