Summer Nights

Baseball games. 4th of July. County fairs. Many of our summer celebrations end with the hushed anticipation of glittering skies and thunderous echoes. While some of us (and definitely our dogs) might struggle with the startling sounds, it’s hard to deny the beauty of the fireworks themselves. They bring us together in moments, however fleeting, to experience the same delight and wonder we felt as kids– a small break in our often ordinary rhythms.

God is present on these dusky evenings, as we snuggle under blankets and listen to the hum of the surrounding crowd (and mosquitoes). When bright colors drip and spark over the black sky, and our attention is fixed on things above, we’re reminded of the One who gifted this night and all our others.

Here’s a verse and a prayer to reflect on during the evenings you might find yourself under fireworks.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8-10).

A Prayer for Watching Fireworks

Lord of Light, your beauty illuminates the darkness of the world. As fireworks paint the sky, may we also vibrantly reflect the joy and delight of your Kingdom. Let this celebration of temporary moments call us into the light of your love. Pillar of Fire, stay with us and guide us this night and all that follow. Amen.

The role of prayer in Christian life is powerful and helps us in our mission to creatively explore how we connect with God in the ordinary, extraordinary, everyday moments of life. For more everyday prayers, visit this page
