SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

A simple prayer is all it takes to connect with God everyday. And if you don’t know how to pray, no worries! We’ve got you covered. Check out this simple prayer below to get started!

Caught Between Cultures

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb...” (Revelation 7:9).

Those times when you don’t feel like you fit in because…well, you don’t fit in.

When there’s something about you—your experiences, culture, skin color, beliefs, family—that isolates you.

Those times when people try to welcome you, but their welcome feels more like sympathy or obligation, and you end up feeling less welcome.

Or worse, when someone you think could be a friend, makes an offhand comment or a joke, not knowing that it offended you, but it makes it clear that part of your story is not okay to share.

And then there are those times when people are just flat out rude! Like when Spanish is your heart language, and you see someone walking around a store with a shirt that says, “Speak English or get out of my country.” It’s okay to get angry.

Or when your family barely escaped Fidel Castro’s dictatorship, and then you see someone wearing a Che Guevara shirt and you know that person probably has no idea how many of your people were murdered by him. Again, it’s okay to get angry.

But instead of letting that anger get the best of you, and doing something you regret…here’s a prayer for those moments when you feel caught between cultures.

A Prayer for Those Caught Between Culture

Jesus, the God-man, you were the ultimate third-culture kid. Your heart language was from heaven, but you grew up on earth. You represented the culture and values of your Father’s Kingdom, and contextualized that kingdom for the world. You understand how it feels to be caught between cultures. Meet me in this in-betweenness. Help me see the beauty in my background, and speak to me in my heart language. Surround me with a community who values what I can bring, and help me look ahead to when people from all nations will worship you together without anyone feeling left-out. Amen.
