SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

I Want What They Have

Improvement is everywhere on social media. It’s practically all we see on our Explore page: videos of changing diets, exercise routines, and sleep patterns. People talk about “perfect” morning routines and products that are the key to looking flawless.

Rooms are spotless. Bodies wrinkleless. Travel budgets endless. Friends always gathered, people always smiling, and kids are eating chocolates in matching, all-white linen that somehow manages to never stain.

Aaand, then we look up from our phones and are brought back to the reality of our own lives. Woof.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison, especially when we’re only seeing one side of the story (or screen), and when *so* many other people have the things you’ve been desperately hoping and praying for.

Instead of rejoicing with others, we end up fielding jealousy and frustration. We begin to objectify people or boil them down to overly simplistic narratives which then results in more feelings of guilt and shame.

Comparison can blind us to the designs and blessings God has for our own lives, yet it’s something so many of us wrestle with.

God wants to free us from feelings of insecurity, shame, and resentment.  He wants us to know that, in order to feel the fullness of his joy, we don’t need anything but him.

Instead of comparing ourselves to others, how might we learn to see ourselves in Jesus?

If comparison is a struggle for you too, try this prayer with us.

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children” (Ephesians 5:1).

A Prayer for Struggling With Comparison

God of perfect gifts and perfect timing, thank you for giving me things to hope for. Thank you for the rich blessings you’ve poured into the world. I’m struggling with feeling bitter when there are things I desire, but I know your ways are above mine. Open my eyes to see me as you do: fearfully and wonderfully made. Open my heart to receive the gifts you’ve already given me in this season. Let me compare myself to no one but your son, so I can learn to be more like you: overflowing with love, joy, patience, and holiness. Amen.
