Why We Need a Prayer for Simplicity

How many pairs of shoes do you have? What about T-shirts?

Now think about streaming services and movies. It’s so hard to find something to watch because there are too many options to choose from!

Or what about music? It’s great to have access to so many songs, but then again it’s also overwhelming to choose something to listen to on the way to the grocery store.

And speaking of grocery stores. How many different types of milk do we need? Or eggs? Or cheese? Okay, maybe there’s never enough cheese. It all tastes so gouda…get it?

In almost every aspect of our lives, we experience whatever the polar opposite of simplicity is. We have more options than ever. As a result, we tend to be more overwhelmed than ever. We tend to spend more than ever. And we are less happy than ever. So maybe it’s time to lean into simplicity, but we’re going to need a lot of God-help for this one! The last thing our culture of consumerism and hyper-customization wants is for us to start living simple lives. So if you want a place to start, what about this Scripture and prayer for simplicity?

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that” (1 Timothy 6:6-8).

A Prayer for Simplicity

Provider of food, Outfitter of lilies, Painter of sunsets, you offer us joy in the simplicity of your creation, and peace in your presence. Protect us from the allure of abundance. Help us find contentment, not in things, but in our relationship with you. Draw our attention to those who are in need and we can help. Give us today our daily bread, and help us to be thankful for it. Amen.
