SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

The Christian prayer life can sometimes feel stale. It doesn’t mean your faith is weak, or that you’re doing something wrong—so don’t get hung up on it! It just happens. But if you want to connect with God and don’t know how to pray, or simply don’t feel like praying…then these everyday prayers are for you.

Take Care of Yourself, Too

Hey “helper friend.” I see you over there, stretching yourself thin to make sure everyone around you is at their best. Being the most attentive listening ear to friends in need, jumping at opportunities to make others feel taken care of and welcome, and pouring out earnest prayers for all those who need the kind of help you can’t offer.

How are you doing though? Are you alright?

I’m not here to tell you that you should stop doing all those things. I’m not going to tell you that “God only helps those who help themselves” (yikes.).

I just want to convince you to stop for a second and think about how much your needs matter, too. You need deep connection and reciprocated compassion from friends. You too, deserve to experience what it’s like for your voice to be sought after, valued, and welcome.

Just don’t brush your needs under the rug, okay? God put them there for a purpose. Here’s a prayer for self-care. You need it.

A Prayer for Self Care

Jesus, who empathizes with the neediness of our human condition, help me recognize my needs as part of God’s good design. Creator God, who gave me limits to remind me to love and help others by your strength and not my own, help me make space for self-care because you desire for me to find rest and rejuvenation. Teach me the difference between striving to help others, and letting you lead me to help when, where, and how you see fit. Amen.

If you’re interested in finding Bible verses about self care, be comforted to know there are a lot! Check out this verse from Jeremiah that reminds us of what it looks like to really flourish when we take time to rest in God’s presence:

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8).
