What is Christian Revival?

Don’t know about you, but we’ve got a complicated relationship with the word “revival.” For us, there’s some baggage that comes with this word, usually revolving around people who feel like the whole world’s going to hell. They are people who emphasize culture wars and make it sound like our salvation is only found in certain politics or denominations. And when they say “revival,” they mean a whole lot of things that aren’t as related to the good news of Jesus as they might think.

But then there’s the true and good side of revival. The clear awareness that we’re in desperate need of God’s help because, when we’re left to our own ways, we often pursue that which is self-destructive and harmful to others.

We need the Holy Spirit to fill us, change us, and make us new. We need God to help us be a light to the world so that others can experience God’s love. That’s real revival, and it’s worth praying for.

“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day” (Acts 2:21).

A Prayer for Revival

God of light. God of hope. God of truth. Pour out your Spirit upon us, and fill us with your love. Break the chains that bind us. Heal the wounds inside us. Repair the cracks in our souls. Shape us to become forces of light, hope, and healing every day. Amen.
