SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

If you don’t know how to pray, getting started can feel strange. So, check out this simple prayer to help you grow in your prayer life, and connect with God today!

The Work Never Ends

When we talk about changing the world, it’s often through what might be seen as “big” things– establishing a nonprofit to help eradicate hunger or increase literacy rates, working on legislation that could end poverty or certain forms of violence…  Or, when we consider growing spiritually, we think about the “most” meaningful time we could spend with God through traditional practices like fasting, bible-reading, or solitude.

It’s easy to attribute more value to the moments we think have the greatest impact on the world.

And yet, while these are important, our lives typically aren’t made up of really big, or even overtly spiritual, moments.

We’re more often engaged in small acts that might go unnoticed and underappreciated. Doing the dishes for your roomates, again. Picking up after the kids, again. Taking out the trash, again.

We might begrudgingly complete these tasks, feeling unseen, and wishing for better ways to spend our time. After all, there’s *real* work to be done.

But, our Servant Savior showed us that the real work is in our everyday lives. How we showcase love and humility through ordinary service does change the world. How we respond when we’re feeling overworked and undervalued is a Kingdom service.

While there are times when we can, and should, advocate for ourselves, here’s a Scripture and a prayer to hep us remember the sacred in the mundane.

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:14-15).

A Prayer for Doing the Dishes

God of the unseen and lowly, thank you for washing me clean. Servant Lord, may my love also be seen in simple, everyday moments. Help me not feel discouraged by monotony, but blessed by the meal you provided and those who shared it with me. In moments where my sacrifices seem unnoticed, help me remember I’m seen by you. Give me peace instead of frustration, humility instead of bitterness, and when I’m feeling overwhelmed, bless me with space to rest in you. Amen.
