SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

The Christian prayer life can sometimes feel stale. It doesn’t mean your faith is weak, or that you’re doing something wrong—so don’t get hung up on it! It just happens. But if you want to connect with God and don’t know how to pray, or simply don’t feel like praying…then these everyday prayers are for you.

Warm Summer Nights

There’s something ✨magical ✨about this time of year. The evenings are warm, the sunsets are vibrant, and the fireflies glow at night. It’s a good season to be outside with friends and family, or to spend time alone with a cold iced tea before routines start again and the weather takes a turn 🥴❄️.

This season can also cause dread, though. Maybe you’re dreading packing up your things and moving back into a college dorm with the roommate you enjoy.. half the time. Maybe you live far from friends and family, missing them so much it hurts. Or maybe you’re just dreading the “same old same old” where nothing changes and summer vacation no longer exists.

Regardless of our circumstances, God invites us to slow down and be present where we’re at. So when the world seems a bit dark, and our own light seems to be fading, we have permission to rest in this season, walking around barefoot in the grass, sky-blue mason jar in hand, trying to catch some fireflies.

Let this prayer and the fireflies be a reminder that Jesus didn’t just say he was the Light of the World— he said that we are, too.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

A Prayer for Catching Fireflies

Light of the World, as I wander around barefoot and catching fireflies, help me to be mindful of the way their glow lights up the night. This is what you do, Lord. You bring light to the dark spaces. And when the sun starts to set, and my own brightness seems dull, remind me that, like the fireflies, you use me to light up this dark world, too.
