SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE
Matthew 8:16-17 Trying to build a prayer life can be difficult—whether you don’t know how to pray or you don’t feel like praying. So we’re here to help you connect with God with simple prayers for the everyday.
How to Get Over Fear
It’s interesting how my answers to “What’re you afraid of?” have shifted over the years.
I still stand by many of my answers from elementary school– sorry(ish) to say it, but God NEVER should’ve given spiders so many legs, and clowns have zero place in modern society.
However, my fears have gotten a lot more complex as I’ve gotten older. The more I’ve experienced the world, and understood the larger spectrum of all the things I could be afraid of– many of which deal with suffering, or loss, or brokenness… Well, let’s just say that my list has gotten a whole lot longer and a whole lot deeper.
When moments of fear start to become paralyzing, here’s a prayer to help us remember God’s power and care for our lives.
“When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
‘He took up our infirmities
and bore our diseases.’” (Matthew 8:16-17).
A Prayer Against Fear
Lord of lions and storms, you are with your people when they feel afraid. Just as you banished sickness and demons, banish fear from my heart. May your presence illuminate unknown and dark places. May your love replace the doubts in my mind. In moments when my fear is well-placed, help me seek shelter in your arms. When I must go on, give me confidence to step forward, trusting in your care and provision over my life. Amen
