It’s been one of those weeks where it’s super hard, but you can’t really explain why. Nothing big has happened. It’s been packed with all of the normal, run-of-the-mill stressors. But it just feels harder this time around. You’re super tired and running short on patience. …and where the heck did this headache come from?😩 If you need a little breath of fresh air, take a minute to walk through this meditation with us. 👀We’re looking at a couple verses from Psalm 17! When it comes to dealing with that stressful parent, it’s been a 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠. Mom called to vent about the drama between her and your sister and (quite frankly), you didn’t want to hear about it. Or maybe dad made 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 guilt-inducing comment about needing more help taking care of the house (even though you were just there playing handyman over the weekend). Sometimes it feels like they come to you with all of their baggage and needs and complaints, and don't give a rip about how you’re doing. More than likely that’s not the whole story—they’re probably just too consumed by their own woes to think about anything else. Still: it’s frustrating. When it feels like you’re at your wits end dealing with selfish and stressful parents, this prayer is for you. 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22). 𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 Compassionate Father, who so lovingly cares about my anxiety and stress, help me to reflect that compassion to my parent(s). Let your patience guide my conversations and responses to their needs and requests. Give me wisdom to set boundaries, and peace to serve them in the ways you’ve called me to. Have you slowed down much lately? Well, here’s the thing– if you do, you might just begin to see God 👀. Crazy, right? We’re talking about seeing God in nature, and why it’s so 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 to notice God in the world around us. 🌴🏄☀️ 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these?” (Isaiah 40:25-26). 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐇𝐚𝐦𝐥𝐢𝐧 Sitting on my surfboard, the lull in waves gave me a moment to reflect on my surroundings. Fish darted about the coral heads in the clear, tropical ocean. Disappearing into coral tunnels, they’d reappear out of an unseen opening, yards away. Did they enjoy the transparent and warm water more than I? Over my shoulder lay the nearest land to us, one of Fiji’s many islands, green with vegetation. Its mountains looked like open hands, stretching skyward in a welcoming gesture towards the heavens. Anchored in the channel, our boat swayed in the glassy ocean. Where we sat, swell lines abruptly hit the barrier reef, making waves break in uniform precision. My friends and I rode them with childlike enjoyment. Immersed in such natural beauty, I was overcome by the fact that God created all this for us to enjoy. A truth I often forget. Creation is overflowing with miraculous design, holy testimony. Albert Einstein said, “The deeper one penetrates into nature’s secrets, the greater becomes one’s respect for God.” Isaiah also tells us to look to creation. He calls it a universal testimony to God. His creation provides a timeless declaration of his love and existence for those who are willing to look. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 You can accept this testimony or reject it, but it’d be a tragedy to ignore it. At the very least, it deserves a response. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, a poet in the 1800s, put it this way, “Earth is crammed with Heaven, and every common bush afire with God; and only he who sees takes off his shoes. The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.” Open your eyes today, take off your shoes on the holy ground of God’s Creation, and notice his wonders.

Modesty is a term that we hear thrown around quite often… but what does it mean and what are some practical ways we can apply it to our everyday lives? 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐐 & 𝐀 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐞 𝐐: “What’s a word or concept from Scripture that’s been challenging you?” 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚: I’ve been thinking about modesty a lot lately. I grew up with a concept of modesty that was more like a dress code. But in thinking about the most modest people I know, my mind doesn’t go to the people covering the most skin. I think about my friends who have a very modest lakeside cottage. Not because of the beauty of the lake or their cottage, but because of the love they emanate, the hospitality they show (because their doors are always open to everyone, and they’re always preparing a huge meal), and the Christian fellowship we share. They’re humble and funny and ooze with generosity. They’re retirement age, but it’s hard to tell what their worth is (not that it matters)—because they just don’t care about fancy cars or clothes or status symbols. I want to be like that. 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12). Contributed by robertsolcan There are a lot of circumstances in the world that we don't have control over. Most of them, actually. Yet, through everything that comes our way, we have the ability to choose joy. That doesn't mean just to be happy-- there is space for our hard feelings, too. But, joy is a feeling that is able to coexist with the tough stuff: grief, lament, sorrow, anger, fear... Joy is able to recognize hope and gratitude, even in our broken circumstances, and that's how we are able to start moving forward.

A few months ago I was in bed for days sometimes even weeks at a time so fatigued that it was hard to think let alone sit for an hour and pray. I had never gone so long in a state of dry and arid prayer. I felt as if I'd been abandoned, left behind, or as if I'd somehow run away from the Father. Weeks went by when all I could pray was "Where are you? Why are you not here????" It didn't take long for despair to set in. Did I do something wrong for him to not feel near in prayer? Was I 'praying wrong' or saying the wrong things? My holy hours became excruciating. I sensed no consolation. I wanted nothing more than to not pray. My screen time increased by the day and fervor for anything holy decreased. To be entirely frank, I could no longer see why I had even said yes to Christ in the first place. I had no physical or mental capacity to gather a thought. The physical and spiritual pain increased and I again despaired. It took a severe mercy to wake me up again. As I sat bent over crying in a chapel after an incredibly painful doctor's appointment I cried out in one last effort. Silence. Absolutely nothing. Days later I sat in prayer and mustered the strength to revisit the scene of the nativity and as I pondered the darkness and mess of the nativity something within me said: "My Presence itself is enough to redeem you." Christ's silent presence in a manger in a way was already redeeming the world. The incarnation and presence of God was enough of a mercy to change the world let alone the miracles, death, and resurrection. Something changed within me that day. Christ's mere presence within me was enough to redeem me. I did not need to "feel" him near nor "hear" him speak to me. No fancy thoughts, insights, consolation or complex spiritual read could have taught me that. I needed a severe silence to hear the language of redemption. Do you hear it my friend? The silence of Bethlehem is redeeming you right now.
