Embodiment
Embodiment
Get physical, get moving, and feel how God meets you in your body.
Does your body feel like an obstacle?
Sometimes when we read the word “flesh” in the Bible, we can start to believe that our bodies are fundamentally bad and an obstacle to following Jesus. But if that was true, Jesus wouldn’t have taken on a body, or made it so clear that he’ll resurrect our bodies to be with God forever. So here are some practices to help you follow Jesus with what you do instead of just with what you think or feel. Start small, and have fun!
Level 1: Novice
Read Psalm 139 in front of a mirror.
Pray over every part of your body, thanking God for what each has done for you.
For a month, try listening to scripture instead of reading it. This is similar to how the first receivers would have experienced it.
Go on prayer walks, asking God to speak to you through what you see, hear, smell and touch.
Level 2: Apprentice
Read 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. Prayerfully respond to God’s invitation to honor him with your body.
Invite God into your workout routine by listening to worship music or praying during your sets.
Find a running buddy, and chat about your walk with God as you move.
Commit to getting enough sleep every night.
Level 3: Master
Read Matthew 25:31-46. Identify the hungry, thirsty, sick, outcast, immigrants, and prisoners in your community and find a way to serve them.
Start a hobby that gets your body involved, like pottery, painting, or gardening.
Create and practice a breath prayer to combat unhelpful thoughts.
Invite friends over for a dinner party, and cook something delicious together!
