SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

“Is the Bible relevant today?” Stories from hundreds of years ago, weird names, suuuuper long chapters. It doesn’t always feel relevant. But to read Scripture is another way for God to provide comfort, clarity, and wisdom. These Scripture meditations can help you figure out  how to get started reading the Bible.

What are God’s Rules and How Can They Help Us?

Anyone else get a little squirmy when the Bible starts listing out a bunch of what seem to be God’s rules and regulations? And depending on what part of the book you’re reading—Old Testament or New Testament—there are quite a few things that don’t seem to apply anymore. Soooooo…what’s the deal with all these commands? Or maybe that’s not even the right question. Maybe it’s more about understanding the heart of a God who cares enough to offer some guidance.

We think this Psalm is really cool because it talks about the why behind a lot of God’s instruction. Or, at least, it hints at why it’s not just something we’re “supposed” to do, but something that’s really good for us. Check out the full Scripture meditation below.

Psalm 19:8-9

8 The precepts of the Lord are right,

    giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the Lord are radiant,

    giving light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is pure,

    enduring forever.

The decrees of the Lord are firm,

and all of them are righteous.

What This Teaches Us about God

  • His commands give joy and light (v. 8)
  • His commands endure forever (v. 9)
  • His commands are righteous (v. 9)
