Is God Really with Me?

Wondering how to deal with anxiety about the future? Or why working harder doesn’t seem to guarantee the success or comfort you’re looking for?

You’re not alone. But as you face unmet expectations or unexpected obstacles, you don’t have to wonder, “Is God really with me?” God is with you. And he wants to invite you to chase after the goals he’s set before you, but with open hands.

Colossians 3:23-24

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Written by Jiaming Zeng

I unexpectedly stumbled upon this verse on a slip of paper at the bottom of a Staples shipping box. It was a stark reminder for me to give the expectations of my work over to God.

The past few months have been a busy season of transition. I graduated, made a cross-country move, and started a new job. As the frenzy of activity died down and the reality of the move kicked in, my initial excitement morphed into anxieties over future challenges. As my search for a new community prolonged, I began to miss my friends and my old life; even the things I used to dislike, like long lab meetings, now seem sweet in hindsight. Before long, I began to question whether moving was the right decision and whether my efforts over the past few months have amounted to anything. I began to grumble and wonder if God is really with me.

It was then that God reminded me of how the Israelites grumbled over every challenge as they journeyed through the wilderness, even though God had done the miraculous and parted the Red Sea to rescue them from an Egyptian army. In times of transition or wandering, trusting that God is the Shepherd will help ward off anxiety and distress.

Why It Matters

Working and not getting the result you wish can be frustrating. When you face unmet expectations or disappointments, remember that the One who leads you to happiness and satisfaction is God, and not the goal you’re working towards.
