A Prayer for the Death of a Pet

SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

Psalm 56:8

A simple prayer is all it takes to connect with God every day. And if you don’t know how to pray, no worries! We’ve got you covered. Check out this simple prayer below to get started!

I Miss My Pet

You knew this day would eventually come, but you were low-key hoping it wouldn’t. Maybe you got your pet when you were just a kid, and as you got older, so did they. Or maybe your pet was one of your first more “adult” decisions of independence, the first creature you had to care for on your own. In both circumstances, you grew up together— your sweet pet became part of your family and now they’re gone.

The memories we share with our pets are typically so special. Perhaps when you were little, your dog(s) would rush up the stairs, sprint straight to your room, burst through your slightly cracked door, and hurl themselves onto your bed, licking your face to wake you up in the morning. And if you had a cat, maybe they’d jump onto your lap and sit with you while you read your favorite book.

On the flip side, perhaps your dog would torment your neighbors in the wee hours of the morning, barking at their shadow…and maybe your cat didn’t like cuddles (or humans in general, lol). Regardless, it’s quiet without them around, and you miss them.

If you’re down in the dumps, missing the company of your sweet (or vicious) pet, remember that they were so lucky to have you as an owner…even if you accidentally caught their tail on fire once.

“You keep track of all my sorrows.

You have collected all my tears in your bottle.

You have recorded each one in your book” (Psalm 56:8, NLT).

A Prayer for the Death of a Pet

Gentle Shepherd, you created a tender relationship between man and animal. Thank you for this gift. While I’m sad over the loss of my pet, remind me that I get to carry the memories I share with them in my heart, even if I can no longer hug them or carry them in my arms. Show me how grieving this loss can be an act of worship, acknowledging your good gifts. Please be present with me as I walk through the next few days without my animal friend. Amen.
