SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

The prayer life of a Christian can sometimes become tiresome, especially if you donโ€™t feel like praying. We hope our simple prayers centered around everyday life will provide some guidance and help you grow in your prayer life.ย

My Roommate Drives Me Crazy

Youโ€™d really been hoping for the best. In fact, youโ€™ve actually tried to ignore your roommateโ€™s greasy, food-stained dishes that just sat e in the sink for days ๐Ÿ˜–. A few nights before, they invited noisy people over and left wrappers and crumbs on the couch. And now, the music blaring while youโ€™re trying to get work done? The list of inconveniences continues piling up until you finally realize: โ€œI canโ€™t take this anymore.โ€ย

Your chat with your roommate goes surprisingly well (almost too well ๐Ÿค”). Their apology seems sincere, but instead of accepting it mentally, you keep expecting the worst. Although your roommateโ€™s actions have stopped, you anticipate the behavior will start back up.

In the Bible, Paul tells readers to โ€œforgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.โ€ย  Forgiving is for both of our sakes, so we can let go of the past and love each other as God commands.ย Ask yourself. Is your roommate trying to make things better? Are they taking your conversations seriously? Are you respecting your roommateโ€™s wishes in response? And, even if theyโ€™re not, how can you still make space for loveโ€“ despite this season of extra messes or annoyances?

Doing so will make your space more harmonious than holding a grudge ever could. And sometimes the things that bother us the most, are the spaces in our lives where God is doing the most important work.

If youโ€™re struggling with a roommate right now, maybe this prayer and verse can help,

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (Colossians 3:13-14).

A Prayer for Roommate Troubles

God who accommodates me, youโ€™ve placed me in this shared space, which I am so grateful for. Please help me establish harmony here. Help me to forgive my roommate for the things that bother me and, even more so, please help me be considerate to them. Gracious Lord, let us flourish in this home. Let it be filled with peace, and our relationship strengthened. And, maybe also give them the strength to occasionally take out the trash. Amen.ย
