Every Body is Different

The amount of time we spend in front of the mirror can vary. Maybe it’s only a quick check to be sure your hair isn’t sticking up funny and that nothing’s stuck in your teeth before you head off to work or class. Or, maybe you have something a little bigger going on that requires a bit more preparation– a job interview or a night out.

Either way, when we look in the mirror, we’re often taking time to study what we think others might see. The things we consider beautiful or interesting, all of which tend to play into specific–and always changing–cultural standards. 

What if we spent some time considering what God sees, too? After all, he gave us 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 body for a reason. He made your face, and planned out the cowlicks in your hair. He equipped us with strengths and weaknesses, all different from one another, that impact the different ways our bodies carry us through life. Some of us have height differences or limb differences or color differences that change the ways we navigate the world around us. But, regardless of what our bodies do, or don’t, look like– he looked at your unique form and proclaimed it 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 good.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

    your works are wonderful,

    I know that full well” (Psalm 139:14).

A Prayer for Looking in the Mirror

God who became flesh, you look at me with delight. Help me to see myself as you do. You who knit my innermost being together and call me Image-Bearer, I thank you for who you’ve made me to be. Thank you for the strengths of my body that carries me to fulfill your calling each day. Thank you for the weaknesses which remind me to trust in you. As I continue to grow and change in different ways, remind me that my body is very good. Amen.
