How to Not Seek Approval from Others

Any other Enneagram 2s out there, or people-pleasing-helpers with a drive to achieve? Well weโ€™ve got you covered with Danielโ€™s verse reflection about how to not seek approval from others, but instead to focus on the approval God already has for us.ย

Chilling with Jesus sounds pretty perfect right about now, so letโ€™s get into it.

Scripture: John 15:9

โ€œAs the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.โ€ย

Written by Daniel Ryan Day

Iโ€™m an Enneagram 2 with a 3-wing. Translation = Iโ€™m a people-pleasing-helper with a drive to achieve. I work really hard to try and earn approval by either proving Iโ€™m โ€œvaluableโ€ to someone or by convincing people that I get stuff done. And Iโ€™m not the only one. We are often defined by what we โ€œachieveโ€ and are โ€œvaluableโ€ to our jobs or churches or even families based on performance. And itโ€™s exhausting.ย ย

But then we read Jesusโ€™ words in John 15, and we discover a differentโ€”more freeingโ€”way to be human. In many translations, youโ€™ll find the word โ€œabideโ€ show up 11 times in that one chapter. The NIV translates it โ€œremain,โ€ but if that doesnโ€™t help make it clear consider the words โ€œrelaxโ€, โ€œrestโ€, or โ€œchill.โ€ Picture a hammock, not a hammer (unless you relax by hammering).ย

Now this doesnโ€™t mean we donโ€™t โ€œdoโ€ anything. In verse 10 Jesus says we should follow his instruction by โ€œresting or remaining in his love,โ€ and then he defines that โ€œobedienceโ€ in verse 12 as being a conduit of that love to others. โ€œMy command is this: โ€˜Love each other as I have loved you.โ€™โ€ Not exactly a big list of โ€œto-dosโ€, is it?ย

Why It Matters

Unfortunately, other people sometimes base their approval of us on what we โ€œdoโ€ for them, but Jesus doesnโ€™t. We donโ€™t have to work hard to be accepted and worry if weโ€™ll be rejected. We belong to God and the Father loves us just because we are his. And the only thing we are asked to โ€œdoโ€ is to rest in Godโ€™s love and show that love to others. So for all of us people-pleasing-helpers out there with a drive to achieve, hear Jesusโ€™ invitation to โ€œchillโ€ and โ€œrestโ€ in him.
