Am I Too Far Gone from God?

If you’re asking, “Am I too far from God?” the answer is always a resounding “NO!” The enemy would want us to believe the lie that we’re too broken or too imperfect for God to want us. But those false ideas keep us from a God who is ready to welcome us just as we are, imperfection and regrets included.

Believe in the power of God’s forgiveness, and dive into this devotional below!

Luke 15:20

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”

Written by Jack Lincoln

Smash! Jagged shards of fractured terracotta tumbled over one another on the porch. My mom’s favorite flower pot was no match for the baseball that launched sideways off my bat. I hid the pieces in the garden, terrified of getting in trouble.

Looking back, I can see that I didn’t need to be so scared of my mom’s reaction—she loves me no matter what. In Jesus’s parable of the prodigal son in Matthew, we’re reminded of God’s “no matter what” love.

A son asked his father for his share of his father’s inheritance. After the father granted the son’s request, the son left his father’s home and spent all of his money on parties and living a crazy life.

Completely out of money and starving, the son thought about how even his father’s workers had more than enough food to eat.

Realizing he had done a terrible wrong to his father, the son returned home to beg for an opportunity to work for food. When the father saw him approaching, he shouted with joy and ran to the young man and embraced him. The father threw a party to celebrate his son’s return.

In the same way as the father, God is ready to embrace and welcome us home as well. There is no action too bad, no flowerpot too broken, or road too far gone to keep God from excitedly running after, embracing, and celebrating us in our return to him.

Why It Matters

The feeling that we are too broken to be redeemed can hold us back from the peace and relief God provides. God is not looking for us to be perfect, but is ready for us, in all our brokenness, to join his celebration of our return home.
