Anxiety is Hard to Control

Do you ever find yourself anxious for no obvious reason? Your heart beats faster, your mind races, and you begin fixating on… unhelpful thoughts. Maybe you’re projecting your fears, assuming the worst about yourself or your circumstances.

In Psalm 62, David is in a similar situation. Verses 3-4 lament offenses against him at the hands of his enemies. But David reminds himself once more of the promise at the beginning of the Psalm– his rest can be found in God. He interrupts fear and dismay, reminding himself where his true security comes from. It’s okay that, sometimes, we have to remind ourselves to trust God.

We can try to interrupt anxiety and call back to the truths we’ve believed and lived before. It’s challenging to keep faith in hard situations, but praise God, there’s grace for us in our struggles, and truth in the midst of fear.

Psalm 62:5-8

“5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. 6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

Observations from the Text

  • God is our source of hope (v. 5)
  • God provides a stable foundation and protection (v. 6)
  • God is our salvation (v. 7)
  • God is trustworthy to handle our cares and fears (v. 8)

God, my heart is pounding and my mind is racing because of ________. My mind, body, and soul find rest in you alone.

You are my hope, my foundation, my protection, and my salvation. When I’m feeling _______, my soul will seek to rest in you.

Prayer Requests

Mighty Rock, today ________  is weighing heavily on my heart. Help me to trust you, even when it’s hard.

My fortress and my salvation, please rescue me from feeling ________ today. 

Prayers of Readiness

I’m secure in the knowledge that you’re going before me. You are dependable and true.

Trustworthy Defender, I step out in faith and let go of ________ which weighs me down.
