This isn't an easy statement to believe. In fact, when we look around us, it's obvious that most things are not. well. at. all.

Aaand, they haven't been for a long, long time.

In fact, when Julian of Norwich wrote this simple prayer, "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well," she was living in the midst of the middle ages— a time fraught with plague, political unrest, and religious upheavals... Any of that sound familiar 🫠 ?

As the teacher says in Ecclesiastes, "There is nothing new under the sun" (1:9).

And, yet.

God has been faithful. Through every generation. Through every turmoil.

Just as Julian was able to look around at the chaos in her world and confidently say, "All shall be well!" We, too, can hold onto this prayer in times of desperation and doubt. Times of confusion and suffering. Times of joy and laughter— when we begin to get a glimpse into the truth of these words.

All shall be well.

All manner of things shall be well.
Any of us who've worked in customer service (or with humans in general, lol) can give a little amen to the statement, “people are crazy!” 𝐘𝐚𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞! People can be difficult for no reason, and take out so much anger on us. “You waited 5 extra minutes for your food! Get over it!” (probably shouldn’t say that). 😬

No one deserves to be treated like crap, and that includes you. You deserve respect. And let's be real, the customer is NOT always right. But wow.

Customer service is some of the most legit practice for being the kind of people Jesus calls us to be— like him! Although he deserved glory and honor, he instead took on the hard work of the lowest server. In his day, that meant washing the disciples’ gross feet. For us, it might look like our day job of cleaning hotel rooms or carrying the 500th bloomin’ onion to a table of mean people. Or, if we no longer work in customer service, it might look like hearing the Spirit’s invitation to simply reach out to someone in our family, help a friend, or serve a stranger.

When we need to be reminded of why serving matters, and desire for God to show us who to serve, here's a prayer:

𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
“Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:7-8)!

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬
Servant God, who left your throne in heaven to rescue the world and me, help me be a servant too. Jesus, who honored the dishonored by washing feet and who showed love by serving your followers, help me bring dignity to the disgraced and show love through my actions. Give me the eyes to see, the ears to hear your voice, and the courage and compassion to follow where you lead. Amen.
Don’t know about you, but we’ve got a complicated relationship with the word “revival.” For us, there’s some baggage that comes with this word, usually revolving around people who feel like the whole world’s going to hell. They are people who emphasize culture wars and make it sound like our salvation is only found in certain politics or denominations. And when they say “revival,” they mean a whole lot of things that aren’t as related to the good news of Jesus as they might think.

But then there’s the true and good side of revival. The clear awareness that we’re in desperate need of God’s help because, when we’re left to our own ways, we often pursue that which is self-destructive and harmful to others.

We need the Holy Spirit to fill us, change us, and make us new. We need God to help us be a light to the world so that others can experience God’s love. That’s real revival, and it’s worth praying for.

𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day” (Acts 2:21).

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥
God of light. God of hope. God of truth. Pour out your Spirit upon us, and fill us with your love. Break the chains that bind us. Heal the wounds inside us. Repair the cracks in our souls. Shape us to become forces of light, hope, and healing every day. Amen.

We don't need to wait for heaven for this to be a true statement.

As C.S. Lewis reminds us, "There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal."

No one is ordinary.

You were made eternal, as in, you already are! Right here, right now.

While we'll experience this fully in the life to come, we don't need to ignore our humanity to focus on eternity. God has already set eternity in our hearts. He's designed us as eternal beings. This knowing changes everything.

How we treat our neighbors. How we love each other. Our confidence in laughter and joy. Our delight in the goodness of his gifts. Our sorrow when we see injustice or people written off as though they don't matter because we know the truth of who we are.

We are eternal.

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
Okay, but should we still throw away our right hand 😬👋?

"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

If you could have a day FULL of your favorite things… why wouldn’t you? This is what we’re talking about when we say the word, “Sabbath.”

Weird… And, probably not how most of us were taught to think about Sabbath.

Here’s a sneak peek of some ways you can participate in this celebration of our limitations:

🤚 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩. Take a break from things that bring you stress.
☕️ 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. Do the things you love.
🛏 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭. Embrace your natural limitations.
⛪️ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. Draw near to God.

Be thankful for closed doors. 🚪

God has protected me from terrible things that would have destroyed me if I stayed in a place too long or took a job I wanted, but didn’t need.

I’m thankful for closed doors, rooms I was evicted from and the new doors that opened quickly after. God is good.

Despite your best attempts to clear space in your schedule and get enough sleep at night, you can’t seem to shake the exhaustion. 😩

It’s okay. Take a deep breath, tired friend. You don’t have to will yourself into working from a store of energy that you don’t have. But you do have an invitation—an open door to come to God, your refuge, and to find rest in him.

If you need some help finding the words, check out the prayer we wrote for when we’re just plain exhausted:

𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart” (Psalm 91:1-4).

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Lord, my refuge, you renew my strength, and I can find rest under the shadow of your wings. Grant me grace for the rest of my day, and give me the gift of deep sleep tonight. Tomorrow, help me wake up in your new mercies, and to focus on serving you and others with the strength you give me for tomorrow. And help me to trust that you’ll keep giving me enough strength, one day at a time. Amen.
