Barriers to Evangelism

When we consider what might get in the way of others knowing Jesus, we could name a handful of barriers to evangelism.ย

In this short devotional, Daniel Ryan Day reminds us that our part is to share about Jesus without adding any more barriers to the path of knowing him.ย

We can share with love and clarity, and then step aside to let God do the work of rescuing someone.

Isaiah 40:3

โ€œA voice of one calling: โ€˜In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.โ€

Written by Daniel Ryan Day

My family and I recently drove about 48 hours in the car over a 10-day span. It felt even longer because on multiple occasions, the highway was at a standstill. At one point, people turned off their cars, and my wife and kiddos went for a hike in the woods while I waited for traffic to clear. This is not how itโ€™s supposed to be! A highway is designed to be the quickest way to drive from point A to B.ย

In the book of Isaiah, thereโ€™s a passage that described what it would look like when Jesus came. There would be someone from the wilderness who prepared โ€œthe way of the Lord.โ€ The New Testament introduces us to John the Baptizer as that guy. He helped prepare the way. He โ€œmade straightโ€ฆa highway to Godโ€ by pointing to Jesus and saying, โ€œThatโ€™s him! Heโ€™s the one who can save us from sin.โ€ย

I like the highway image because it challenges me to think about what it means to make the message straightโ€”meaning clear and unencumbered. What are some of the other โ€œbeliefsโ€ or ideas that sometimes get in the way of people hearing the good news about Jesus? How can I, like a tow truck, get rid of barriers so people can hear about Godโ€™s love?ย ย

Why It Matters

As people who are rescued by Jesus, we are invited to point others to him too. Thatโ€™s our calling as Christiansโ€”to make the love of God known. And hopefully, we are building the type of highway that isnโ€™t full of a bunch of other ideas that slow down traffic. Hopefully, we are able to clearly communicate Christโ€™s love, and then get out of the way, and let the Holy Spirit do the work of rescuing someone.

Itโ€™s important to connect with God each day. Luckily, these verse reflections are a great way to do that! If youโ€™re looking for more good Bible verses to reflect on, check out this page of devotions!
