When Christmas Hurts

Holidays are usually referred to as a time of overflowing love, joy, and family. But for some, the Christmas season is filled with an ache caused by loss, pain, or some horrific experience.

When Christmas hurts, it can also be hard to see others living full of joy. “Why am I not experiencing that same joy? “Why did that have to happen to me?”

If you’re feeling pain this Christmas season, or want to pray for those who are, here is a prayer for the grieving at Christmas:

A Full Prayer for the Grieving at Christmas

Grieving God, who weeps with those who weep, and is present with those who suffer, mourn with me the loss of __________. In this season of joy, may your joy be my strength to walk through this pain. In this season of hope, may I cling white-knuckled to the future anticipation that you will make all things right. And in a season of celebrating the birth of Jesus, may I find the new birth of healing by following grief wherever it needs to take me. Amen.

Scripture: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more” (Matthew 2:18).
