Time to Be Cozy

This time of year gives major cozy vibes. Pumpkin spice lattes, caramel-scented candles, flannels, bonfires, and visiting the pumpkin patch with family and friends. And is it just me, or are there so many different styles of pumpkins to choose from? There are mini pumpkins, colorful gourd pumpkins, large pumpkins 🎃. Sometimes, without thinking about it, we try to pick the ones that look better to put on display, decorating our porches to fit a certain ideal. At times, we do this in our own lives too.

We get insecure when it comes to the things we don’t like about ourselves, and there are parts of our lives we want to hide from others and God (even though He already knows). Like the pumpkins, maybe you, too, have some quirky things about yourself that you’re struggling to embrace.

When you’re trying to decide which part of yourself to hide, or put on display, remember this: God has created you with great care and intention. Nothing about you is a mistake. So, this year, maybe pick a pumpkin that’s not so perfect, remembering that Jesus is perfect so we don’t have to be.

“For you created my inmost being;

    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

    your works are wonderful,

    I know that full well” (Psalm 139:13-14). 

A Prayer for Pumpkin Patches

Creator of Life and Seasons, as we settle into the cozy fall of flannels, scented candles, and pumpkin picking, remind me that you are the illustrator and author of my story. When I become critical of myself, and don’t remember who I am, remind me that I’m created in your image. There’s no part of me that I have to hide from you. And, as I try to decide which pumpkin to pick, help me remember that you choose me every time. Amen.
