Trying to build a prayer life can be difficult—whether you don’t know how to pray or you don’t feel like praying. So we’re here to help you connect with God with simple prayers for the everyday.

There Are No Right Words

The shock of reading a text from a friend and finding out someone close to them just passed away. What do you text back?

“It will be okay…” [hold down backspace and delete text]

“God is in control…” [hold down backspace and delete text]

“I’m so sorry. Praying for you.”

That last text doesn’t feel like enough, does it? We want to do more. But there’s nothing we can say to make it better. And whether we feel like it or not, turning our hearts toward God and praying is actually doing a lot more than we sometimes like to give it credit for. So, if you don’t know what to say? You’re in good company. If you don’t know what to do? Yep, we’re there too.

Here’s the prayer we pray for a grieving friend when that’s all we know to do.

“Jesus wept” (John 11:35).

A Prayer for a Grieving Friend

Weeping God, who cries when your friends are grieving, help ____________ know you are walking through this pain with them. Comforter, may you give them a tangible sense of your presence, and may they feel your arms of love holding them in their loss. Prince of Peace, fill them in heart and mind with your stable and life-giving Spirit. Help me to know how to be present with them without trying to fix anything, and give me the right words to say at the right time. Amen.
