How Do I Make a Difference in My Community?
We all feel we want to make a difference for the betterment of those around us. But if we’re honest, we often make quick judgments about people, their circumstances, and what kind of help we think they deserve. Don’t let those preconceived ideas about people in need keep you from seeing those who you are best equipped to help.
So, “how can I make a difference as a Christian?” Let’s take a look at how Jesus’ life can inform how we make a difference through helping others.
Scripture: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these my brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me’” ( Matthew 25:40).

“Prison is a lonely place… especially during the holidays. Would you consider writing and mailing a card for a woman in prison and unable to spend the holidays with her family?”
As I read the above post on my newsfeed, I realized that I had never given a second thought to what life must be like for prisoners during the holidays.
In Matthew 25, Jesus explained that whatever we do to meet the needs of others, we do for him.
There are people in need all around us. Some people, like the prisoner, need someone to care enough to reach out. Others may need food, or a friend, or a jumpstart for their car.
As Christians, we honor the Lord when we meet others’ needs without expectation of return. We reflect God’s love and compassion for all his children when we serve them—even those whose realities may be far removed from ours.
Jesus often referred to overlooked and forgotten people as his brothers and sisters. This means we’re all siblings and have a responsibility and opportunity to care for one another. How someone landed in their circumstances shouldn’t be our first concern—being like Jesus in helping them is what we’re meant to worry about.
Why It Matters
Every day, the Holy Spirit is ready to work through you to extend the same love, compassion and mercy to others that Jesus extended to you. Is there someone in your life whom you tend to overlook, discount, or ignore? Maybe because of their circumstances, or perhaps because of how they’ve treated you in the past? Consider inviting the Holy Spirit to help you demonstrate God’s love through your next interaction with them.
