Rest
Rest
Slow down, practice Sabbath, and relax into God’s goodness.
Feeling burned out?
One of the wildest things in scripture is that God chose to rest after creating the world and gave his people a weekly rhythm to follow him into that same rest. If you’re feeling like your life is anything but restful, we’re right there with you. While you might not be able to book a 3-week trip to the Bahamas, there are ways you can lean into God’s rest in your everyday life. As you do, you’ll find it takes a lot of trust and humility to slow down. But there’s deep joy in letting God, your shepherd “restore your soul” (Psalm 23:3).
Level 1: Novice
Find a day of the week to consistently practice Sabbath, and begin that day with a slow reading of Psalm 23.
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Set a time limit for social media, and stick to it!
Choose the longest line at the store, and people-watch.
Level 2: Apprentice
Revamp your evening routine so you can always get enough sleep. Begin each evening with a scripture that slows you down (Psalm 4:8 or 3:5 could be a great place to start).
Give your phone a bedtime, and don’t “wake it up” until you’ve had some time with God.
Be like Jesus: take naps!
Make a habit of taking leisurely walks, without a screen or podcast.
Level 3: Master
Go on a weekend retreat, focusing your prayer around one or two verses you can easily memorize and meditate on.
Commit to driving the speed limit.
Eliminate something from your schedule, and take that time to be with God.
Disable your social media accounts for the month.
