Learning from a Child’s Delight
Life is flying by.
You’re so busy.
But this morning, after rushing the kids out the door, making school drop off, then running across town to your much overdue dentist appointment, you find yourself with a few minutes of sitting still, waiting.
You could check your work email from your phone. You glance across the room and see another woman doing what looks like just that. But on the chair next to her, stands her toddler, stretching to his tippy toes to look at the fish tank behind her. And he’s engrossed. Watching with such interest, he excitedly exclaims “Bubbles!” when he spots them rising to the surface of the tank.
And this—this scene is what stops you in your tracks. It’s what inspires you to take a long breath, drop your phone back into your coat pocket, and sit in the moment you’re in.
Kids have a way of doing that—of showing us what slowing down and being present looks like. And how a slower speed so often leads to noticing more of what we have to be glad about.
Today, we’re celebrating the lessons kids teach us without trying. Here’s our prayer for witnessing a child’s delight!
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
A Prayer for Witnessing a Child’s Delight
You, Source of Joy, have instilled in this little one an innocent curiosity about the world around them. Praise your name! It amazes me how curiosity and attention give way to a pure, simple delight. God, help me learn from this child. Make space in my mind to regard the very works of your hand, and then to slowly turn them over until my thoughts too, give way to delight. Help me to see, consider, and rejoice each day, and celebrate the same in this child. Amen!
